An experience that changed my life entirely!
When I was in Italy the day before the wedding of 2 good friends - I received a message on Instagram at night that an influencer/artist wanted to take me to Iceland on the Dior Beauty trip to Iceland for the new Sauvage perfume.
“Save the dates, you're coming with me!”
I was completely buff... because i alawys wanted to work with Dior Beauty and also with this person. And this person was sitting in our movie theater at a short film screening at the opening of the Berlinale YEARS ago and watched the film "40 Days" by Charleen Weiss and me - and said he wanted to start a project with me - I never expected it to be such a project…
Almost 2 months later, we got off the plane, landed in Iceland and the first thing I saw was lava, right next to the airport. That feeling of seeing lava is just indescribable. Especially in a place where nature still seems so untouched by man. We checked into the hotel, had dinner with Dior and traveled to Deplar Farm the next day - the place to be if you want to stay luxuriously on a farm in Iceland. We spent the next week there.
Near us: a ghost farm, waterfalls, huge mountains, green landscapes, horses, whales and ice. The perfect place to make content and so we started our mission for a video production and shot photos on the side - although it's been almost a year, I remember these moments fondly every week.
I went beyond my limits on this project to risk everything for the best shots. We hung from cliffs because the angle was better, we went into the waterfall because it looked mystical, we did scenes on the helicopter and hiked up the mountains AND rode horses - so I became friends with a lot of dogs. We had karaoke nights, the best food and everything felt like a cute school trip with the aim of getting the best result.
16-20 hour days on location and then 2 weeks of intensive editing. But it was more than worth it, because strangely enough, but also fortunately, the hard work turned into a signature project that is always a hit and has become a real game changer for me and my portfolio. A year later, I can say that sometimes one project can change everything for you if the right audience sees it. Funnily enough, since the commission I've only been getting perfume reels as requests and to be honest, it's a bit unexpected, but I'm having so much fun in the beauty industry that I don't want to get out of it!
Hard work pays off - always!
I am more than happy and grateful for this challenge and all that has come out of it.
- Hannes
